April News!

Support Group Recap

eggWe had a great group meeting.  We enjoyed dinner from Q’doba and visiting with one another.   Mary Culver, survivor Tommy’s mom, shared with us ways that we can raise awareness and funding through companies and government officials.  She gave us a lot of helpful information.  Her handouts will be available online soon and I’ll get those to you.  While we were brainstorming on how to spread awareness, the kids were enjoying Hideaway pizza, hunting Easter eggs, & making Easter crafts.  Our next meeting will be May 30th.  The location is yet to be determined as the library will be unavailable, but I will let you know as soon as it is set.

Family Advisory Council

The Family Advisory Council is made of family members who have a child who has received care at the hospital.  There are two main goals of the FAC; to promote family-centered care and to partner with families in providing care for children.  Some of our projects have included providing holiday parties for kids in the hospital, providing nutritious meals for families, and helping revise hospital policies.  We meet on the first Tuesday of the month from 6:00-7:30 pm with dinner provided in the classroom on level A of the Children’s Hospital (right past the oncology clinic).

Bereavement Service

The hospital is beginning an annual event to honor children who were patients of The Children’s Hospital that have passed away.  The event will be April 20th.  They mailed out invitations but I have heard from the hospital staff that they received many of the invitations back because of old addresses.  If you would like to attend and have your child included in the ceremony please email Miranda Ruland at msruland@saintfrancis.com.  Miranda told me that this will be a service that is not intended to be heavy-hearted but a ceremony to remember the children and celebrate their lives.

Camp OK Corral

Camp is coming!  Things will be a little different this year than in the past.  Camp OK Corral is joining with Champ Camp for kids with heart conditions because the hospital will be hosting the camp from now on.  Camp dates are June 10-14th for ages 6-18.  It will still be at Shepherd’s Fold Ranch in Avant, OK.  Children who are or have been oncology patients and one sibling are invited to attend.  There is a cost this year of $100 per camper and $75 for a sibling.  However, this is how it is stated on the registration site, “The requested ticket price is $100, but if you cannot pay that amount, please pay what you can. You can even pay part now and part at registration. (You can also pay more than the suggested price if you would like to help offset additional camp costs.) This system requires that you pay a minimum of $1 to register.”  You can register now at http://campokcorral2013.eventbrite.com/.  If you have questions please contact Angie Mathis at angie@jamathis.com.

That’s it for now!  Coming soon will be the handouts from Mary Culver’s presentation at Support Group and information on Bit by Bit camps this summer.  Also, Lynn Leeper and I are working on some events just for moms and maybe another event for teens.  Don’t forget to enter your email and subscribe for future updates!  ~Amy
